« on: May 10, 2024, 10:59:07 AM »
I am currently playing Higurashi: Onikakushi, and yeah I had fun. So, I wanna how is your experience reading it and what chapter you're currently playing (Like Watanagashi, Tatarigoroshi, etc.).

Huh, watched the anime just recently, was thinking to post about it in the appropriate thread. While it's less detailed than the games as far as I know, it's a very good mystery story that builds up well and plays around with character expectations. ...Just stay the heck away from 2020-21 seasons, they're little more than a bad fanfic.

Artstyle makes characters look like they're shrink-wrapped, the violence is overdone way past the point of hilarity, and the plot has so many holes and facepalm-worthy moments it's painful to look at, when it's not a truncated copy-paste job anyway. I'm still going through them but so far I've done hour-long rants on my streams about every singe arc. And it's not even entertainingly bad, just sadly incompetent. Wouldn't advise anyone to see them, except if you want an example of a sequel that just completely misunderstands the appeal of original.

I kinda sped through the anime without really absorbing much of it several years back. Maybe I'll read the VN's instead.

Do post your thoughts as you go. Even I, someone for whom spoilers only spark the interest more, would agree this is best experienced blind. The stories masterfully build up expectations and then break them with awesome twists. So making notes to see how things change around could be fun to see.

Interesting idea, thanks for suggesting that.

Appropriate scene in the anime. Rena can be so creepy, I love her. (Also, your YT recommends are probably full of spoilers now, sorry ^^; )

It was my own fault that I did search up some Higurashi stuff on YouTube. U_U (Also, the image I showed you was from my Steam screenshot of Onikakushi. [Also, my favorite character is Mion Sonozaki just because I got her as the result of this quiz, LOL!])

Now that you mention that moment, I do have a question in case/for when you finish Onikakushi.

Spoiler:
By that point, Rena has killed someone in at least some of the timelines. Which might explain her anxiety about the police. Is that mentioned or hinted at in the game? Because it's not in the anime.

Read Higurashi and Umineko during quarantine and enjoyed both a good amount. Higurashi especially has some great atmosphere, especially with the original art I feel since the backgrounds made everything far more uncanny. The new art I'm not that big a fan of, but I think it isn't that big of a deal since Higurashi's writing is still good.

Artstyle makes characters look like they're shrink-wrapped, the violence is overdone way past the point of hilarity, and the plot has so many holes and facepalm-worthy moments it's painful to look at, when it's not a truncated copy-paste job anyway. I get why Goutsu exists, as a way of linking it with the rest of When They Cry. But yeah I agree it's kinda just, bad. Nothing really felt earned during it and the motivations just fell flat. The worst part is that I feel like it could have been good if it was more thought out, but it felt like it was just being made up as it went. At the very least it added some stuff relating to Ciconia (assuming it's not a red herring) but given that that series has been in limbo for the past half-decade it doesn't really amount to much.

LOL, can I see the stream where you literally trashed the 2020-2021 anime adaption?

It was spread over quite a few streams, and half of them are already gone (wouldn't bother highlighting due to bad mic and lots of mumbling). Wouldn't advise it anyway since those seasons rely heavily on knowing the older ones and I had lots of issues with how story was handled so spoilers.

Things only get worse in question arcs, obviously. But that's needed for build-up to great payoff in answer arcs, and a well-earned victory in the end.

Huh, well... I use the Console sprites and BG using the 07th Mod. And truth to be told, I actually liked them.

I have....... A lot of things to say...

To say I was a little bit scared couldn't go further from the truth, I was actually on the edge of losing my crap, due to things happening. As I go further, it'll be full on spoilers.

Spoiler:
WHAT IN THE ACTUALLY HELL?!?! Keiichi was repeating the same thing Satoshi did unwittingly?!?!?! And... and, Rena was actually unhinged... Repeatedly apologizing after getting her fingers crushed from the door of Keiichi's; trying to go inside the house...

This stupid sound novel made me lose my mind!!!!
(Also, does it mean Satoshi and Keiichi are the Roxas and Sora of Higurashi???)

More like Zack and Cloud I guess.

But yeah, probably my favourite dramatic moment here. (Which is why I consider it a personal slight the way 2020 anime handled it in particular.)

Wait, what? They play zombie tag THAT early? In old anime it's shown in season 2, which concentrates on the last two answer arcs, and works well to foreshadow important elements of how they resolve the threat to the village in the end.

That said, once you're done with each game post your thoughts on what's going on with the village and the characters. A lot of stuff gets built up and recontextualized in different arcs as they go, and would be interesting to see how that changes.

Yeah the chronology in the anime is a bit messed up since they had to cut down on the story a ton compared to the visual novel

Huh, guess there's only Keiichi's joke during a landfill visit, which is more of a replay bonus rather than a hint. But yeah, that was one of the rare interesting ideas from the newer seasons, but I guess it's more just them mixing different arcs as they want.

Spoilers for Higurashi Kai (Arcs 5-8) and Sotsu:
Spoiler:
Rena does kill Rina in Tsumihoroboshi (Arc 6) and also in Higurashi Sotsu, however that only happens due to Rena going L5 from Hinamizawa Syndrome which we know didn't happen in Onikakushi because she doesn't go insane in that chapter, only Keiichi does as seen when he remembers the events of Onikakushi in Tsumihoroboshi. It's more likely she seems anxious of the police in Onikakushi because Keiichi is going insane due to Hinamizawa Syndrome, Ooishi wanting dirt on the Okazaki family, and Rena's history with the police since while she didn't kill anyone in this loop, she did injure several students at her old school.
