Thankfully right now we simply don't have HTTPS enabled, as opposed to a bad certificate.

It's enabled, but it's not set to default to HTTPS. Shouldn't be hard to use Let's Encrypt and CertBot to automatically renew the cert for free.
A lot of sites have HTTPS enabled but force the server to only use HTTPS through URL rewrites as part of the HTTPS everywhere initiative. Which, is exactly what the old site had.

im hoping this sites gonna never need to deal with the "bad certificate for 3 months good certificate for 1 month repeat" cycle because that was annoying. and i hope this site doesnt take as long to load because i think it was the spam bots that made old motk take forever to load everything

and hmm, so you have the honor of the first gay trans marriage there. thats pretty epic

I wouldn't say "thankfully". Passwords, private messages etc. flying across the Internet in plaintext in this day and age is not exactly great. Even an expired certificate is preferable.

+1

HTTPS and SSL in general is pretty serious these days, plus Google actually punishes sites that do not force HTTPS by default by de-ranking or de-listing them from search results. I'd say it's imperative to get the ball rolling on HTTPS as soon as possible.

As someone who runs a personal website as a hobby HTTPS is definitely a necessity these days. On a forum where people are logging in, sending PMs, and making posts with their profile attached security is paramount. With LE it isn't too hard to do a set-and-forget setup, done properly the admins will likely never see an expired certificate unless the renewal process is changed.

My condolences go out to Helvetica and those that were affected by her passing away. She was a great person to talk to and very knowledgeable with certain topics that interest me, and I'll miss her popping in on IRC to entertain us all. Thankfully her legacy will live on in this new incarnation of the forum, and hopefully we'll all be more acceptant of each other's differences and respect the decisions one makes for themselves.

Feels good to see we're off to a new start!

Btw, how do you use your old avatars? Option to upload custom avatar picture isn't showing up for me. Am I missing something?

Edit: Thanks Karisa, didn't see that thread.

Although I've had an account on the previous incarnation of the forum for a long time, I was barely active. And by barely active I mean I...literally...only maintained my project advertisement thread. Out of the events mentioned I only recall the Touhou Smash drama, and I didn't even witness all of that. I will be trying to be more active here in the future, since the reboot makes the entire forum seem a little less scary.

The cycle of rebirth cannot be ceased.

Although I can't find how to change avatars beyond a few stock ones. Just as I found a new one to use too.

EDIT: Oh wait it seems tied to you making your first post. Gonna miss YOU WA BAN! however.

Yeah there's two things I miss (I realize this site is still super new). One are the roles. I miss having my name be silver, just got so used to it, it's weird being orange again. The other thing I miss are the old emotes, particularly :V. I've grown way too fond of that one.

I saw that Karisa was asking if people were interested in getting the roles back, and I'd have to say yes. Would be cool to reboot the Idiot Hierarchy again since we have a lot of users that joined after those just kinda stopped.

I have the old actual theme file for the old grey/orange theme. It's install-able into SMF and could actually be used as an option.

Same. We absolutely need :V back and preferably all the other emotes from MotK 2.0.

Suwako's primary purpose for years has been to serve as a non-admin account for me to use to browse the forum on non-personal systems. I will avoid speaking in absolutes, but it is highly unlikely she will be coming back.

why you make me read analog clock, it wouldn't take 3 of my answers
Hope we get HTTPS and the old emotes back, the not having HTTPS in particular makes me feel a little unsafe.

https is an important thing for a dynamic website like this. A lot of websites already use Let's Encrypt to do SSL certifications. Thing is though, I'm unsure how Tom is hosting the website, because some hosting providers do not allow Let's Encrypt. The old ShrineMaiden used Let's Encrypt, but that's because helvetica actually had full control over the virtual machine running on Linode and could do so. Some virtual private servers don't let you have full control like this, and the providers do not allow Let's Encrypt. It'll have to be seen.

https://letsencrypt.org/ <-- you get a SSL certificate here
https://certbot.eff.org <-- this makes sure that the certificate actually gets automatically renewed, so you wouldn't have to deal with the 3 month renewal thing that kept happening.

I'd say it's definitely a requirement because of LettyJournal, Passwords and Private messages. It's really easy for someone on the same network as you to snoop non encrypted connections. One more thing, I am connected to shrinemaiden.com via HTTPS, and it's using a self-signed cert. It has the same issue as before where the browser gives a big warning but it's certainly better than plain text.
