How to Write Danmaku Battles in a Touhou Fanfic
« on: January 15, 2025, 04:26:53 AM »
I have a hard time to imagine how I can describe the danmaku battles in a written medium, as it is usually in a visual form. Please help me how I can do it and give me examples. Thank you.

Honestly, how you'd describe any sort of combat (esp. melee)?

You might throw in some shmup/danmaku terminology to sound cool but the basics of it are still the same IMO.

Like here's something I just whipped up on the fly

Quote
Reimu whipped around, eyes glittering with annoyance, and quickly fired at Marisa. It was her standard two-way amulet shot, a warning shot, if you will. Marisa easily dodged, excitedly calling out "No need to go easy on me~!" as she fired rainbow rings of stars that took direct aim at Reimu.

I guess it depends on how much you want to game-ify it? Like are there in-universe power/point/oneup items? Do they keep 'score' in competitions? etc.

Besides the spell card casting and shooting danmaku, no. But for the scoring part, if it's like a knockout game or how many enemies you can get kind-of-game, then it's possible.
