Windows 11 Jank
« on: November 13, 2024, 01:42:14 AM »
Ok so I've been playing touhou for a while now, and for my first years I used a windows 10 laptop which worked fine. Recently I had to get a new laptop, so now I have a windows 11 one. The games worked completely fine on the old computer, but on the new one they seem to have a lot of jank. This applies to not only official games from Steam, but also somehow touhou fangames too?

First, sometimes the game tosses out my inputs. I thought I was going insane or bad at video games when I first got this computer, but it has happened many times now, whereas it never happened on the old laptop. Sometimes I just press a direction and marisa doesn't move at all. It gets really frustrating and I haven't seen anyone have any issues like this. It's also not a hardware issue, my keyboard works perfectly fine playing any other game. I'm using powertoys to get a preferred key loadout but I have tried not using it and it still happens.

Second, there's occasional lag spikes. The game goes down to 50 fps way more than I would expect it to. This is a new, good laptop that should be able to run these, and this didn't really happen on the old laptop.

Finally, the games sometimes get really choppy while they're in fullscreen. I don't really know how to describe this, the game's framerate kind of just dies, even though the fps display stays at 60.

What's going on? I tried installing vpatch, it didn't really help. Is there some other thing I'm supposed to download to get these games to run smoothly? Is this even related to windows 11? Is this yukari's fault? pls help

You could try to run compatibility mode on your windows 11.
Basically, you
1. Go to the .exe file of the game
2. Right click on it
3. Click Show More Options (thank you windows 11)
4. Click on Troubleshoot compatibly
5. Try the recommended settings and see if that fixes the issue.

3. Click Show More Options (thank you windows)

I hate, hate, hate the fact that Windows 10/11 hides many options in the crappy settings app or just reduces them to tiny icons

I,within the range of compatibility issues if related to Windows 10/11,I had also met discreet success with ,within compatibility for all users, toggling on "use legacy dispay ICC for colour management" ,(after clicking and going through "DPI settings")"use this setting for fixing scale problems instead of the one in Settings",and (if it is not already set )"use the DPI that has been set -> 'I signed in to Windows' ".
EDIT: Of course it is best to try out or be suggested more variables through (Windows)Troubleshot Compatibility(Usually Windows 7 or 8,but more rarely Windows Windows Vista or Windows Vista Service Pack 2).

Is the compatibility issue(s) with Windows 11 resolved? I have recently remembered quirkier ones which requiring 2the suing of 2 connected Keyboards ,1 primary and 1 secondary,to solve

Be sure to disable VBS (Virtual Based Security) on Windows 11 machines that are primarly focused on gaming.

Microsoft already has a guide for that - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/options-to-optimize-gaming-performance-in-windows-11-a255f612-2949-4373-a566-ff6f3f474613

What you're having with performance are frame time inconsistencies. Frame rate can stay the same, 60, but not all frame finish in the same time. This can be fixed by a lot of things, but since we are talking doujin games, try subscribing them to Game Mode: enable Game Mode in the Settings > open the game > press Win+G > click on the gear icon > check the box close to "Remember this is a game" > close and boot the game
This way, you'll make the game use a special optimized power mode whenever the game is in foreground.
Be sure to also leave the power plan on Balanced in the Control Panel, if you so wish, change the power mode instead in the Settings menu Windows 11 has. Power modes are not the same as power plans, they are better and more sofisticated, CPUs can transition from C-states and P-states more efficiently and so on.

I don't know about the input issue... I never had that type of problem unless I'M the one making bad input decissions (disabling input emulation, for example). It can be anything really. If you're opening these games through Steam, I recommend you don't. Steam Input causes all sorts of problems input related (sometimes even peformance related) and there's many ways to emulate inputs in these games. Steam Input is just kind of a pain in general. Anything open through Steam will apply Steam Input, even if it isn't a Steam game (added through the add game menu).

I hope these help you. If not or if you have any doubt about any babling I made here, please, quote this and ask!
