Touhou lost media
« on: August 15, 2024, 11:48:09 PM »
Y'know, after discovering that EoSD had a bunch of early trial builds that unfortunately went lost forever (due to their download pages not being archived, although 2 builds have been found), i do wonder if Touhou has its own fair share of lost media. Cancelled games, planned features, cut characters (like Rin Satsuki) or even pictures or music! i mean Touhou as a franchise is very old so it's possible that there is some lost media out there waiting to be discovered, who knows maybe we could find something interesting...

Something that immediately comes to mind for me is that PoDD was originally intended to be horizontally-scrolling, and was called Yumejikan instead of Yumejikuu.

Ah, your danmaku is beautiful. Simply amazing.

Memories of Phantasm fan anime probably has some scripts that were left over when the series ended. They even published one script with very limited, visual novel style animation.

EDIT: Well, they had at least one script left over. Now they're restarting production again for at least one episode.

Hold on, ARE THEY GOING TO MAKE ANOTHER EPISODE?!?

Hotizontally-scrolling Touhou game? Damn, that would have been pretty cool yet weird. Imagine if ZUN went along with it, maybe Touhou games would be all horizontal scrollers instead of vertical

Since the original idea for PoDD has already been mentioned, the other major example, and only Touhou game made by ZUN to be unavailable for play, is Touhou Gold Rush. Made after Impossible Spell Card, ZUN essentially made a game for an event in three days where Seija uses the True Miracle Mallet (not the fake one she uses in ISC) to rob Reimu in a brief, 2-3 minute game. Because it was made in a very short period of time and by ZUN's admission does not fit into canon (since Seija shouldn't be able to use the mallet), it was never released publically and only videos of it in a crowded venue exist.

In my opinion, the more intriguing piece of lost media for this project isn't the game, but the music used in it. ZUN stated that during the game, an arrangement of Little Princess plays in the background which he made specifically for the game and, to my knowledge, has never been released elsewhere. Since the game's audio is completely drowned out in existing videos, this song essentially cannot be listened to in any form. Though it likely is an instrumentation change like you often hear in the music CDs.

And on that note, one last piece of lost media, though technically it is not Touhou. The earliest prototype version of Shuusou Gyoku, the first Seihou game, had a different soundtrack than what was used in demos and the full game, with three exclusive tracks. While two of these were uploaded by ZUN to his personal website back in the day, one of them, "Frontal Attack," has never been released outside of this prototype. It can be heard in this video recorded by Shuusou Gyoku's creator, but covered up with sound effects and, I believe, does not fully loop. It is, I believe, the only known song made by ZUN to be truly lost media.

Oh yeah i already heard of Gold Rush, though that little tidbit about the game's music makes it all the more interesting and mysterious

Oh i just remembered. A user on another thread mentioned various doujin works that are very old and are the "first of X", like the first remix, the first fan-art etc. Among all of these, he mentioned a doujin comic called "The septentrion of the late princess" which was apparently the first fan-comic made about Touhou. It was allegedly published in 2002 at comiket 63. I wonder if people have already found this comic or if it's just another piece of lost media, because finding it would be a pretty significant event considering it's the earliest Touhou fan-comic ever made. There should be some kind of search party LOL  :cirnotan:

Oh, hey, speaking of lost media, do anyone have any idea where I could find animations related to Toho Clock ?

They're basically a number of short animations that comes together with short one minutes arranges

It's main website kinda went poof a few lots of years ago, and I only got to see some Toho clock related animations while mindlessly browsing niconico a few years back, so I didn't really keep track of anything. If anybody got some kinda clue (or even better, a proper link to a site that happens to have them archived), that would be super cool.

It's like a small and cute treasure trove that kinda vanished, so I've always been curious about it ever since I ran into Toho clock related arranges on youtube.

I'm still mad about the Anime Tenchou x Touhou Project anime screening that was only shown at select theaters in Japan and never released outside of that, making it lost media. Done by ufotable and everything.

Yes it's been 14 years and I'm still mad about it.

Apperently they did show the full movie but forbid people from recording it, yeah a real shame

There is this era of Touhou project in the 4 year gap between Mystic Square and Embodiment of Scarlet Devil that's always fascinated me. It was the time where ZUN wasn't 100 percent on whether or not he was going to continue Touhou. It has just fascinated me as ZUN seemed to be in a transitional period with his artstyle going from the "how 2 draw manga"-ish style of the PC98 era to the more original style in the Windows games.

This transitional period seemed to have a blend between the two styles which allowed ZUN to occasionally show the characters outside of the PC98 limitations

I know there have been various bits and pieces of media released through this period but it is very scarce. An example would be the portaits of Reimu and Marisa from Shuusou Gyoku.

[ Attachment: You are not allowed to view attachments ]

(I imagine this is what the Mystic Square artstyle would've looked like if it were made for Windows machines)

touhou-memories on tumblr and i think touhouwiki has pages dedicated to misc. art which covers a little bit of the lost era.

Then theres the completely lost media that I'm interested in, the original sketches that ZUN digitised to make the art for the PC-98 games. You can see them in Highly Responsive to Prayers but nowhere else.

Who knows if he even still owns sketches like those, but a big deal is being made about the yearly Touhou conventions that have been held the past three years. In them, there's a no photography room where the original concept art for characters is displayed, including some wild things like a version of Seiga with cleavage, and a full size portrait of Daiyousei as she was meant to appear in EoSD (they say she appeared much more mature in this than she ended up being envisioned by the fandom and later official manga). These aren't "lost" as they are shown every year, but it seems they are completely unavailable online for the time being.

I don't know how many people know about this but the artbook has been released online. Due to the forum rules I can't post the link (hosted on a very NSFW website), but if you google "アニメ店長×東方Project "artbook"" (make sure you keep the quotes on the word artbook) you will find it

Oh yeah I'm very aware of that and it's the only piece of media related to the anime itself that still remains out there and the closest thing we have.

Worst part is, I just remembered they did promise a DVD release in early 2011 or so but it just never came out ever.
