Can touhou work in a TTRPG?
« on: April 08, 2024, 10:24:17 AM »
Oh hey hi

I'm a fan of TTRPGs, although a fairly new one to the whole space, i wasn't there when DnD was accused of bringing the devil and stuff like that mainly because i wasn't alive

But i've been delving deeper into TTRPGs as of late, not only by being part of a campaign, but reading about TTRPGs beyond DnD, such as Pathfinder or GURPS, with that last one being quite interesting to me

In case you don't know, GURPS stands for Generic Universal RolePlaying System, and as the name would imply it's a system meant to fit any kind of campaign you can think of, from dungeon-crawling fantasy, a cyberpunk future, a murder mystery in 1920's USA, or a fighting tournament in the dinosaur age; whatever you can think of, you can make it a reality with a bit of brain work (since, as to be expected, that level of freedom comes with the baggage of complexity)

Naturally, my brain liked to combine to interests together and think of a way to implement Touhou into a GURPS campaign, i do know the existence of Gensou Narratograph but i find it quite limited to what me and my friend group are used to

In my search for what to do, i also came across Danmaku Hanamatsuri Kagura, an adaptation turned original game which practically tics all the boxes i was hoping for (the main one being the ability to create your own character), however i feel that system is a bit... half-baked, there are stuff that i'm probably gonna add once our players and i gather to play, but i still fear a bit about the clunkyness the system can bring

I understand that translating a game where hand-eye coordination, quick thinking and reflexes are a top priority into a TTRPG is probably a fools errand, but my brain is quite stubborn when it comes to stuff like this :cirnotan:

I want to know your opinion though, how would you translate the world of gensokyo into a TTRPG?, i want to know because i tried making some sort of system for GURPS, but when i discovered the aforementioned DHK i decided it was best for my players and i to stick to it instead of learning GURPS from scratch

I think that building an RPG system with Touhou mechanics in mind would be one of the easier parts. There's a plethora of fangames that have taken Touhou to a turn-based system so I guess those could work as reference when it comes to making an effective battle system. I don't know much about TTRPGS though so don't count my word on it.

If you want, you can check out the Rumia's Party Games section in the forum. The RPGs they do there are basically just like TTRPGS but without tables and without math (which is kinda better not gonna lie).

I do understand your want for a TTRPG that takes Touhou's mechanics in mind, at least you understand the difficulty of such a thing.

I tried something similar in Minor Existence Quest wherein you decide what kind of character you are by Race, then your Ability. I used a stat named Danmaku Expertise to decide how good you were at Spell Card Duels. The issue I see with this in retrospect was that it decided both dodging and shooting.

To put more emphasis in different styles of danmaku I would probably implement different "styles" and have them be reliant on different stats.
Like "Constricting" danmaku (Think of "Mediciine Sign "Great Galaxy in a Jar") would be effective against characters who rely on speed and reflexes like Marisa, probably by reducing how much they can move or their rolls when defending against such an attack.

For the creation of your character... That's somehow the easiest part.
Get several races from touhou (I chose "Fairy", "Divine Spirit", and "Beast Youkai"), give them different stats and a quirk (such as Fairies being able to regenerate health when surrounded by their Nature), then let them choose a "Style" of Danmaku (Constricting, Fast, Homing, Wide, Large, etc.) that would modify their attacks.
Most of this seem to be Danmaku Hanamatsuri -Kagura- thought of. But I agree with you when you say it seems... Half-baked. And that you would definitely need to add more if you ever used it.

I don't play TTRPGs often. I play what are called "Skirmishes" (Multiplayer turn-based Strategy games ala Fire Emblem and XCOM over forums or imageboards). But they have the same design principles. Haven't ever been a GM though.

Magnificent Youkai of Neofantasia - I planned on running this with some friends, but never got to it. The rules seem interesting, though. If I ever were to do a Touhou TTRPG campaign, it'd probably be with this system.

Phantasmagoria of Illusory World - Only skimmed through, but figured it's worth posting.

There's also Next Dream, but it's an expansion for a system I don't have, or something like that. Might be worth looking into, though.

The two I linked focus on the actual Danmaku part of Touhou, which is really cool. Hopefully someone finds these useful.  :lives: :cirnotan: :lives:

Also, that Danmaku Hanamatsuri system you linked in the OP is itself an adaption of Touhou Danmaku Yuugi Flowers, if that helps at all.
