Some time ago I learned that when you play this game from a fresh scorefile, the lives is set to 5, not 3. Should the default lives rule be changed to 5?

This has been known since 2015 (https://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php?topic=8097.msg1154610#msg1154610). The precedent was using 3 lives (including the now-removed linked Japanese video, indicating it wasn't just MotK that used 3 lives), so there didn't seem to be a good reason to change it... is there a good reason now?

I had a feeling it was brought up at some point. I thought for consistency all runs should be starting with default lives. This would have some influence on the score however and past runs have used 3 lives as the standard. Mu (https://www.twitch.tv/Mu021) however has started playing from the default lives setting in his runs. I believe I did tell him about the default lives thing. So no there's probably not that strong of a reason to change it, but it may depend on how the folks at Silent Selene (https://www.silentselene.net/) look at this, as this will be the new RF scoring leaderboard (with PC-98 included). I could ask them what they think, or you could try getting in touch with them if you want - they haven't set up game-specific rules yet (I should be able to send a new invite link).

Oh, the new leaderboard has PC-98. I'd heard about its development, didn't know it was online.
If that becomes popular, honestly I'm not sure if there's a good reason to keep around the MotK scoreboards anymore... currently the only real niche is including the "untracked" games. Pretty much no one's used them for anything else for many years.
In the case of HRtP... with a new WR holder that uses 5 lives (and has a large enough WR I don't think it's just due to the higher early-game clear bonuses from said lives), I'd propose going with lives should be set to 5 or below... there's no advantage of playing with less than 5, but that'd avoid disqualifying all the historical runs.
I'd message them to propose that, but I don't see a general Silent Selene contact method, only individual developers?
