Title: Characters you would like to see again

What's a character that hasn't been playable for many years but that you would like to see again in a future game? Mine is definitely Meiling, she hasn't showed up in a official game since Hisoutensoku i think. She definitely deserves some attention given how she has been ignored by ZUN. Maybe she could appear in the next spin-off, that would be kinda cool :meiling:

Characters appearing in-game for the 1st time or their 2nd time? Or Characters having  appeared multiple times(like your example about :meiling: Hong Meiling)? Window Ones referencing PC-98 ones (  :meiling: Orange and Hong Meiling  :meiling: )? Outside of the games(print works) beyond being cameos?

Well... I want Letty Whiterock to appear once again, but on the fighting game spin-offs. She has a very cool ability and she is strong enough to cause a full-on incident. Yes! Maybe have a plot of her using her full potential and losing control of it, causing an incident!

Also, for PC-98 era, bring Rika back, she's too based to be left behind and forgotten, since she is actually cool and have the guts to fight against Reimu.

There are tons of characters that ZUN introduced and then just...didn't do anything with them. Take the Aki sisters for example, they appeared in MoF and then got ignored, only making some small cameos. There are many characters that deserve a spotlight in my opinion

Yuuka, please! But I gotta accept that if she hasn't made it into the latest Phantasmagoria-style game, she's not coming back at all.

I would normally say Remilia needs a comeback but we at least get some cameos/references of her in print works and endings so I'm lightly satisfied.

The character who I think really needs a comeback is Eiki. Even though she's a final boss, she rarely appears in anything at all. She's one of my favourite characters and it's a big shame that ZUN neglects her.

First and foremost I think Stage 5-Stage 6 bosses who haven't appeared in any game as a playable character following their debut game should get a chance to stand it the spotlight again. Like Kaguya, Eirin, Orin, Shou, etc...Then we could gradually move down to the characters at the lower stages.

I've really been wanting to play as Shou for a while, particularly in the fighting games so that she could have a reason to use her non-magical spear as an actual spear and not just to look cool. She's not even playable in Hopeless Masquerade, for some forsaken reason!

I also want Alice to return - not only is she both cute and cool (like many Touhou girls), but it's really weird for ZUN to say that Alice is a special character (https://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Perfect_Cherry_Blossom/Music#Stage_3_Boss_-_Alice_Margatroid's_theme) in her grand return to Windows, and then outright stop featuring her in the games after a while.

And speaking of magicians who know Marisa, I also want Patchouli to have another major game role, both because I love her elemental magic and how it's themed after the days of the week, and also because I recently realized her personality is a lot like mine - pretty much everything the Touhou Wiki says about her personality (https://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Patchouli_Knowledge#Personality) is more-or-less applicable to me as well!

I think it would be cool to see more PC98 characters coming back but I doubt it'll even happen again. But two characters from the Windows-era games that I would like to see again are the Komeiji sisters.

Now that I think about it, I wanna see Hatate make another meaningful appearance - I've often been forgetting that she exists, and I'm sure that's mainly because she only had one speaking appearance outside endings, and that's in her debut game of Double Spoiler. She's too cool to get cast aside like that!

Hatate is my Absolute favorite and having her in a game would be so cool!! But knowing how ZUN writes his stories and thinks about them, I'm afraid she's always going to have a secondary role as Aya's foil. The way I see it, Aya is already The Journalist Character that he can use to make some commentary or as a device to delve deeper into other stories, and Hatate's ability and personality are ill suited for that role (her being way more restrained/reasonable than Aya and having an ability that allows her to investigate things very quickly from the comfort of her house). Also!! Her spell cards are entirely based on taking pictures and she's not known for her strength, unlike Aya. So I doubt she's gonna appear in another game. But I hope I'm wrong!! I would love to see her again.

It would be nice to see Genjii again. After all, he flew Reimu around for all five PC-98 danmaku games. But he is probably the least probable character to make a reappearance in the series (;´༎ຶٹ༎ຶ`)

He did get a mention though, kinda, in a throwaway line in one of Reimu VS quotes against Yachie. Is not much but that's at least something.

Mima is a lost cause in my opinion. It's pretty clear that ZUN isn't going to bring back any character from the PC-98 era, and to be honest i do believe that most people aren't serious about wanting Mima back. It's become a meme at this point ROFL :cirnotan:. And by the way i still can't get over the fact that Touhou as a series began all the way back in 1995, same year as the first PlayStation!

Well yeah, it's pretty obvious that ZUN isn't really interested in putting a PC98 character in the spotlight again. What I do find saddening is that a character who appeared in 4 out of those 5 games, and was playable twice even, got shafted harder than a character who only appeared once (wasn't even playable) yet was brought back (Alice)

Knowing the modern state of Touhou canon though (and its weird shenanigans and misadventures) perhaps is best letting vengeful spirits lie and keep resting.

And yeah, Touhou is about to have its anniversary soon. ZUN hasn't done much with them as of lately but we will see how it goes.

Can't wait for the anniversary! Also i agree, bringing back Alice but not Mima who had more appearances than her was kind of a weird move

Guess he wanted to do more things with Alice but couldn't see how to go on with Mima. Or he wanted to take Reimu and Marisa in a different direction and their existing backstory dragged them down. She, as well as many other PC-98 folks, had their features and concepts reused for new characters anyway, so that's probably why none of them ever coming back.

Hatate...oh yeah Hatate! now that i think about it, what was the last time she made an appearance in any official Touhou media? Again, she is one of those characters that were introduced but then were just severely ignored. A shame really

i dunno about that, IMO Rumia isn't that interesting of a character. Maybe there could be a story about the ribbon but other than that i don't really see any story potential for her

As i said before, it is basically not going to happen since ZUN just isn't interested in bringing back PC-98 characters (at least for now). Though your idea does bring up some cool speculations. I wonder if Kotohime would be redesigned like Alice and Yuuka...

Yumemi Okazaki for me, PC98 is underrated in general and she has a amazing theme and design (at least in my opinion)

even though it was already mentioned that ZUN has no plans of ever touching PC98 again, I'm still secretly hoping Elly finds some way to make it back in, her design is lovely and the scythe has good danmaku potential

realistically though, I just hope he continues to use the more recent characters from th19 and 18, at least for a bit longer

(also seconding Rika cuz she's fun)

I think the nearly 30 year old lore with her character could be built upon with the lore created over the decades.
I feel like her becoming more bitter over the years and finally enacting a scheme she's had in play for years to try to finally defeat Reimu or destroy Gensokyo or what have you might work...

I think established by her ending in Mystic Square though,
she's probably just become a sweet old woman (ghost) who's settled down and isn't as much of a vengeful spirit anymore. My headcanon is that nowadays, she is the retired mother to the now independent Marisa and respects Marisa and Reimu's friendship enough to not torment the miko.

Though another option, Demon #2 from Reimu's Mystic Square ending.
Looks cute, one of the few demons in the game that looks kinda like a demon (mostly just having the horns, being a demon trait) instead of a human that's called a demon.

And Yuki and Mai, that would be cool

While not an independent character per say, I do wanna see Reimu's Shuusou Gyoku design brought back. Colder season clothes, dual gohei, sorta a bridge design between the two
(Plus, her and Marisa's portraits gave us a glimpse into what the art of Mystic Square might've looked like if it weren't limited by the PC-98
