I think perhaps after this game, a discussion is due on what entails a "party game", and why we should aim to play Mafia without being absolute not nice people to each other for the sake of it.

I think it was a rule a long long time ago but was never enforced, more like a convention really. I don't remember if there was an issue with people impersonating other people's avatars or something initially.

I do know that after a while it wasnt a rule because there was that game sb changed his pfp to a mafia goon and then got lynched for it (not really but it's fun to remember it that way).

It never really needed to be enforced as a full-blown forum rule because everyone agreed it was a good idea and so no one actually violated it.

Anyway...

I think it's important to consider the spirit of the rule. We agreed not to change avatars to minimise any confusion and likelihood of being confused for someone else. If you've gotten used to seeing a picture of a catgirl in NNR's profile, for example, it can be disorienting if he suddenly changed to a dogboy. You're sitting there looking for his posts, but overlooking them because the avatar changed.

A tragedy.

I agree and maybe we should broaden the "rule" to general no-impersonation since it affects more than just mafia. I believe you can also change your display name and if done together with an avatar could be quite a convincing "disguise".
Server-sided and Touhou character avatars would be except from this for obvious reasons (many people want them and its unfair to "claim" one etc)

If the reason for Anon is to allow dead players to sub back in due to a limited player list I think that's kind of lame tbh. It sucks as scum to kill a good townie and then they're back, probably in some lurker spot that could have been an easy mislynch/misvig and is now this good player. Not to mention going from town -> scum would be pretty weird.

If it's just cuz Anon results in better gameplay (debatable) sure I guess.
